How to Roll the Perfect Joint

Rolling a joint is an art form. There are many techniques for rolling a joint, depending on how much weed you’re smoking, whether you’re adding shatter or wax, and the paper you choose. Over the years, I’ve learned the key is to roll them tight enough so it won’t burn too fast, but loose enough that air can easily pass through the joint, and smoke can pass through the paper.

Size Matters

Are you toking for two or more? Or on your own? One of the first things you’ll want to consider is how big you want to make your joint. When I’m smoking by myself, I often use a smaller-sized paper, and roll a little less than an inch in width would be the perfect size for one person. For fun with friends, I choose something larger, often a blunt wrapper, or use two regular papers to roll an inch and a half in width or more for a real fatty.

Step By Step: Roll a Joint

What you’ll need:

Step One:

If you’re adding any shatter or wax, this is when you should add a line down the middle of your paper.

Step Two:

Grind your buds and sprinkle them in the middle of your paper. You can begin with sprinkling, or you may find it easier to spread the cannabis evenly down the length of your joint by hand.

Step Three:

Pick up one end of your paper, use fingers to hold weed in place, and slowly begin rolling the paper around the herb, ensuring it doesn’t overlap. You will make a zigzag pattern from one side of the joint to the other as you roll toward yourself.

Step Four:

Using your thumbs and index fingers on both hands, pinch together either side of your weed to ensure it stays tightly packed as you roll.

Step Five:

Now, lick the gummed strip on the paper. Fold that over into a crease. Repeat this process for the other side of your joint.

Step Six:

Use your index finger to roll both sides of your joint inward toward one another at the same time. This technique may require some finesse and practice, but should result in a perfectly tight roll.

Step Seven:

Remove your fingers and lick the gummed strip on both paper flaps to seal them together. If desired, you may use your lighter or match to heat the gummed strip for a few seconds, which will ensure it adheres tightly.
When I’m smoking with friends, I’ll often pre-roll several joints to keep around for the night. When I’m done smoking, the first one, all I have to do is grab another and go!
Now that you know how to roll a joint, you can try some variations. Experiment with different papers and sizes. If you’re feeling adventurous, try using a blunt wrapper or two papers rolled into one to make your joint extra fat.
